BACKGROUND OF FURIPACA INC AND MOST SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENTS
Coamo April 5, 2019. Due to the concern of the high
incidence of cancer diagnoses in the community of Río Jueyes and Sabana Hoyos
of the town of Coamo, a community group led by Mrs. Ileana Ortiz Correa
undertook the task of convening the community, through a Community Assembly ,
to expose this concern. In that assembly it was agreed to
establish a Foundation to help cancer patients.
On July 14, 2011, it was incorporated as a non-profit
entity with the name of "Fundación Riojueyana Pro
Patients of Cancer (FURIPACA) Inc."
After its incorporation, efforts were made to formalize the entity,
understand, prepare regulations, determine who and how the services will be
provided to patients and ways to raise funds, among others. A
census was also started in the community to obtain information on the
incidence, prevalence and survival of cancer among other data. We extended the services to the entire municipality of Coamo in the month
of November 2013. Subsequently extended the services to those affected on the
island of Puerto Rico according to the available resources.
During this process the community was impacted with a
Health Fair in which screening tests were offered for breast cancer, uterine
cancer, PSA and CEA among other tests. A total of 400 and more
people benefited from different evaluation and other services. In addition,
different educational talks have been held.
Another achievement is that they have already
been able to benefit cancer patients through financial aid for
transportation, so they can get to their evaluation or treatment
appointments. In addition they have been able to provide help
with nutritional supplements, healing materials such as gauze and
others. They have also been given financial assistance to pay
for expenses related to your treatments that are not covered by your medical
plan or other coverage.
